Also known as aviophobia or aerophobia, the fear of flying attracts a great deal of attention. This may stem from commercial aviation’s deep entrenchment in modern society. Professional and social obligations may force the most craven travelers to board a Boeing 777 once in a while. Media coverage of fatal airline crashes and the events of 9/11 may heighten the fear of flying for some. However, the friendly skies remain safer than America’s highways. Stats show a much greater likelihood of dying inside a hacked Toyota Prius over flying in a Quantas Airlines Airbus A380. Why does the fear of flying affect such a significant segment of the population, including Bad Company’s Mick Ralphs and Friends star, Jennifer Anniston? Seriously, J-Dawg, the real danger came from your exposure to Matthew Perry’s killer comedy.

A fear of flying may be the result of a distinct phobia or stem from related fears like acrophobia (fear of heights) or claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces). Sometimes an individual develops aviophobia after experiencing something negative or frightening while flying—the heavyset fellow from Cleveland who sits next to you and won’t stop yapping or maybe the flight attendant is up and down the aisles breaking wind like nobody’s business and tries to pass it off as turbulence. Meanwhile, the oxygen masks have fallen and the talons of aerophobia have penetrated a flyer’s psyche. The causes are many but so are the treatments. Common phsychological remedies include desensitization, flooding, virtual reality and slamming shots of Cutty Sark.

The fellows depicted here on this American Apparel t-shirt appear to be wearing protective gear as they board a fifties-era commercial plane. Maybe they were members of a David Bowie fan club and took their protein pills and put their helmets on. It’s your shirt, you make the call.
